Jackett Determined To Keep Trotter

Kenny Jackett has dismissed speculation that Liam Trotter will move to promoted Southampton this summer.

After impressive displays since joining us from Ipswich, there has been plenty of speculation this summer about him departing, but Jackett is having non of it.

Speaking to Newsshopper he said.

'We definitely want to keep hold of him. I have seen the speculation and I've also got to say we've had no enquiry or bid from Southampton, nor would we encourage any because Liam is central to what we are trying to do.'

It's good to hear Jackett speaking so strongly about his desire to keep Trotter, as if there is any truth to the speculation a string standpoint will only increase the fee if something should come from it. Failing that, it might bring to an end any speculation if club's think they will really have to fight for him.

It's clear Jackett wants him to remain at the club given he has been offered an extended contract and with Millwall currently in negotiations with Abdou and Robinson also, we want to keep the core of the team together at all costs so we can look to improve further.

On the contract issues, Jackett wouldn't comment on how the talks were going, but did instead choose to comment on Jack Smith's recent extension.

'We are pleased Jack has settled down and he deserves it. Jack has shown a good standard of performance and I think still has some improvement in him. His best years are ahead of him.'

Slowly starting to see some good depth being added to the squad, and Smith, like others, gives us other options to play with as a season goes on and good coverage.
