A stuttering performance which did improve as the game progressed and a comfortable victory in the end.

It was a poor start. It was almost as if they didn't know each other very well and we were struggling to string a few passes together. We fell into the trap of thinking well, if that doesn't work, we can always try the long ball. That was meat and drink to them as that is about all they are used to. They were trying but it wasn't working well. Our keeper looked solid and the back four looked competent enough but we kept getting caught with the ball. Craig wasn't helping with some poor movement, Thompson was running around like a man possessed but not making good decisions and Saville was struggling to play some fluent passes. Almost the best move of the half came from them. The ref was giving them a helping hand by blowing up whenever a puff of wind knocked them over but not doing the same for us. We had a glorious move going down the middle but their bloke had gone down clutching his head as if he had been shot. The ref blew up and we got the ball back with King in our penalty area. From one of their sorties another of their blokes went down. The free kick was decent and Cooper got crocked blocking their shot. He hobbled on a bit but a couple of minutes later was replaced by Gregory. Craig moved into the middle, Fergie dropped back, Fred moved to the left and we looked a much better team with Gregory leading the line. In the whole 45 King made one regulation save and their keeper made none. I say again....none.

NH clearly had strong words in the dressing room and we came out in the second half a different team. Saville played a little deeper, everybody played with a bit more bite, Fred and Worrall changed wings and suddenly we looked a whole lot better. We pressed them back and started to look the part. Saville looked good in tight spaces and they started to look vulnerable. A good move down the right saw a jinking run from Fred with an excellent cross which Elliott met on the far post and we were one up. They tried hard to get back into it but Webster was looking his imperious self, Mahlon was taking no prisoners on the right and we started to dictate the game. From another good move down the left there was another good cross to the far post and there was Elliott again to nod it home. We began to look comfortable. NH took off Gregory and put on Butcher who played a forward midfield role. And then he took off Saville and replaced him with Williams. He showed his class by finding time a space to pass the ball around. There was a great ball into the box to Fred who turned well, hit a crisp shot which the keeper parried away. We played out the additional three minutes without a problem.

So, who looked good and tried hard to force their way into NH's thinking for Saturday.
King looked solid and you would have had to pinch yourself to believe that he was the second string. Mahlon looked his normal energetic self and his play shone out. It was a similar case for Webster who looked dominant. Cooper looked OK but was crocked and may be doubtful for Saturday. Craig showed very clearly why he is now a second string player. He was adequate but nothing more.

Worrall looked energetic and tried hard but he too was no more than adequate. Thompson was poor. Full of energy, big leaps but poor at passing and not really a threat. Saville looked good in spells and did improve in the second half. Fergie looked good as a wide man and as a LB. Butcher contributed little but was reliable. Williams looked a class above the lot when he came on with time and space to pick a pass, break up an attack and set up a forward move.
Fred was full of running and a threat at times but still has much to learn about forward play. Elliott got better, scored twice and probably edged MOM with his goals. Gregory looked good when he came on and his play swung the game back into our favour in the last ten minutes of the first half.
My mate and I thought at half time that the highlight of the night would be the fish and chips at the Brockley's Rock but we were wrong......thank goodness.

No mention of the 'cute' waitress - has she marked your card?

Or has her boyfriend had a word?

Thanks Silver.

Just Back from the World Athletics. Pretty boring, exception being the final few pole vault jumps and my wife asking at London Bridge to "take me up the shard"

You better hope she doesn't read this!!

P.s. Thanks Silver
Thought they did try to pass the ball around early on & some of it was pretty.
Yes, Ben got caught twice trying to overplay the ball in his own half, maybe he was trying to impress too much now he's way down the pecking order.
The Bolton manager was there but don't suppose he learnt much & the fan on the board whose whose no longer the fan on the board but is still on the board was also in his usual seat in the directors box. I didn't see the fan on the board whose not on the board though but will let you know when they let him anywhere near the board!!

Thanks Silver,

This sounds like last season, I hope the Forest game isn't a one off where the opposition style allowed us to play. I can see the Bolton game being difficult as they know all about us from last season.

I've just watched the brief highlights on SSN and I was wrong when I said their keeper had no saves to make in the first half. He did push a fierce header from Cooper over the bar but that was it. Sky were very kind to us in the highlights and chopped out all of our poor bits and some of their efforts too.
I thought that NH had taken off Gregory for tactical reasons but apparently he had a tight hamstring. He didn't go down injured and the trainer didn't come on but he could be doubtful for Saturday. Interesting that AOB did not start and was not on the bench but I suppose you could say the same for Hutch.

Well, who can blame her?

Being mentally undressed by a bloke, is a situation no young girl should be subjected to.

Especially when said bloke is chomping his way through battered sausage & chips.

I think we was pretty much out-played first half for the simple reason
they wanted it more. As usual it took one of Neil's half-time talks to
liven us up. This my opinion;
King....6...Nothing much to do.
Romeo...6...Got caught in possession a few times in front of the West
upper. Needs more to displace Connor.
Webster...6...Rusty 1st half, much improved 2nd.
Cooper...7..Was in cruise control till the injury, fine header from a corner.
Craig...7...Never stops competing and cajoling,Dig him out when he plays
bad, not all the time.
Worrel...6...High energy but can't take a free-kick to save his life.
Saville...7..Was getting some rough treatment but stuck to it. Will be a big
asset to us this season.
Thommo..6...Another who was caught with the ball too many times.
Trying to hard perhaps.
Fergie...7...A safe and dependable outlet on the left.
Fred....7...Worried them and put a shift in. Would like to see him given
chances to build a rapport with Elliott.
Elliott...9... A very impressive performance and if we can improve the
service to him he will score goals.
Subs;
Gregory...6...Wonderful movement, woeful finishing.
Williams...7...A class act.
Butcher...6... A number 10 ? You having a laugh Neil.

Hopefully Fred will have a mini scoring streak this season. His best spell was at Wycombe when he scored 5 in 4 games.

"Hopefully Fred will have a mini seared steak this season."

I'm not bothered what he eats - I just want him to score some bleeding' goals!

I thought last night showed us what we probably already know

King, Webster, Elliott - good enough to play instead of Archer, Hutchison/Cooper, Morrison/Gregory when need

Craig can still be useful when needed

Saville, Cooper and Gregory (when he finds his boots) are all first team

Mahlon should start, sometime you wonder if he should just be a winger, but too quick for us to risk not having in defence

Ferguson , a good player, but left back or left wing?

Worrell, good player, would he get in the first eleven, no, would he be worth keeping yes, but not for free kicks, cant see why Ferguson didn't take then

Thompson, I don't think will be in the team, I could see him going on loan, if NH gets in one more midfielder?

As for Butcher, I don't think he gets a fair crack, but almost certainly the last game we will see from him?

and Fred............I still think he will be a huge asset to us, he needs to play surely instead on AOB, if there is only one change from Saturday, unless Cooper is off work! I think if he gets his confidence up and the crowd stick with him, he will deliver. That bit of skill at the end of last night, was a glimpse of how good and disappointing he can be of course , great turn and then a shot like a 7 year old,

If Elliott & Morison are up front, it may be worth playing Ferguson & Fred on the wings. Both are capable of putting over good crosses.

However not sure what joy Morison & Elliott would get against Beevers & Wheater.
