Papillon is a great read but a complete load of bollocks.
Henri Cherriere ? Was definitely there and I'd recommend his book
"Dry Guillotine" to anybody interested in the French penal colonies.
He talks about the leading characters and nowhere is there a mention
of a Papillon. After finally escaping he made it to New York, where the
change of life-style quickly killed him.

Just noticed I didn't mention Dry Guillotine's author it's
Renee Benoir I think. I think this Papillon character must have heard
of him and others and cobbled their stories together. There was, and
never was any trace of Papillon or Henri in French or Guyanan records.

Yes Midway, Papillon is a great 'story' - not a historical document.

The follow-up, Banco, is also a good read - whether fact or fiction, I've no idea.

Good read as I posted but the film, oh dear !
They turned it into the Steve McQueen story, Plunging off a cliff,
full of native darts ? Waking up to topless beauty queens ? Even
our Henri didn't go that strong !

Yes, the film was crap.

Whereas in the case of 'Day of the Jackal' both book and film were excellent.

Back editions of Tit-Bits makes compulsive reading.

My GP no longer puts out any reading material now we are predominantly ethnic, a few mags on grooming would have surely gone down well with the stani's.

If you have a kindle then I recommend Chasing Tigers

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Chasing-Tigers-Mike-Phillips-ebook/dp/B01E3...

I have just finished "I am Pilgrim" by Terry Hayes and it is one of the best books I have ever read.

I am Pilgrim downloaded, the Chasing Tigers wasn't there in the Kindle Store, yrt I could order via amazon - but only got an account in the wifes name and couldn't be arsed to open another account or stick my kindle on to hers to download
