Neither Carlisle nor Northampton have won the Football League, you may not be surprised to hear. But one did qualify and actually play in the FA Charity Shield. Which club, when and how?

Technically it's now the Friday Quiz but that aside the answer is Northampton but I've no idea how that came about.
What did surprise me if google is to be believed (& I've got my doubts) is that the Charity Shield was twice played at the Den!
Is that right Whisky or has someone been guilty of "editing" Wikipedia?

Am I too late to guess Carlisle or Northampton?
Sorry for my tardiness....I had a life today!

BP...the Jean-Paul Sartre of MO.

Why is it you Frenchies just can't stop banging on about existentialism...?

Do you remember when Albert Camus had a trial with 'Wall in 1948?

He was busy leaning on the far-post, thinking about 'The Myth of Sisyphus' - when up popped Willie Hurrell and banged two past him.

Safe to say he was no Alex Stepney.

While we are on the subject of philosophers (well I think that's the subject) was Michael Marks any relation to Karl Marxs?

Yep, Harpo (ne; Adolph) was the grandson of Karl and Micky Marks was his uncle or was it great. Anyway they're all in it one way or other.

Michael Marks/Teddy Sherringham. What a comparison.

Marks had been released by the club. Docherty became manager & brought him back. Mainly out of desperation as the club had no money & were short of players.

Marks partnered Sheringham for a season & held his own. Getting into double figures for goals, which was a good achievement for an 18 year old playing in a team that nearly got relagated.

There was talk of Everton being interested in Sheringham & Chelsea being interested in Marks.

The following 10 years Sherringham went onto great things while Marks only played 3 games for Orient.

I would have kept Marks on as cover for the promotion team. Surely better than Robbie Cooke & Horrix.

Not sure if original answered yet...

But I am hoping it's Everton before WWII - as in researching my alternative universe (sic) book I had trouble deciding if Liverpool were the last in 1947, because one of the reasons Matt Busby went to United instead of Liverpool was he didn't like the way the Liverpool board interfered in the team. However, I think Kay was the 'official' manager, so it was Everton.

In my (sic) I also have Winterbottom becoming the 'proper' England manager after his success in the 1958 World Cup, where he ignores the FA committee.

This will only really make sense to Whisky re the book!
