Back to the real stuff tomorrow and some decisions for NH about who to pick.
The first half display against Stevenage was forgettable but the second half perked up and we won comfortably in the end. But, did anybody really shine and force their way into NH's thinking?
King played well but was never rally stretched and had to make a match winning save. So, he is a good back up and as long as Archer is fit he should start. Romeo is all action and endeavour and, like King, is a good back up and I don't think McLaughlin had a sleepless night wondering if he'd lost his place. Cooper looked crocked and I didn't realise that it was Mahlon that had crocked him until I watched the highlights. Hutch is a more than adequate replacement and I expect him to start alongside Webster.
Craig looked adequate at LB and nothing special when he moved into the centre so I think he will take his rightful place on the bench with Meredith ready to show how a proper LB can play.
Midfield has issues. Fred played well wide right but is still on a learning curve and probably has more impact as a sub. Wallace was right to point out that the next two games are winnable against less strong opponents like Bolton and Ipswich so we need our strongest side out. I expect Jed to be wide right. Saville had a better second half on Tuesday and I expect him and a classy Williams to start in centre midfield. The issue about who starts wide left is still unresolved. AOB wasn't even on the bench midweek which leads me to think they were keeping him fresh for Saturday. Fergie played well but probably has more impact as a second half sub.
I wasn't aware that Gregory was struggling in the second half on Tuesday but NH said he felt his hamstring was tightening. Forgive me but I cannot understand how players go through 4 weeks of preseason, run around until they are sick of it, play several preseason games and it is not until the season starts that they get tight hamstrings. I don't think they will risk him tomorrow so I expect our two goal hero Elliott start alongside Morison. We will get a chance to see how easy he finds it playing against Beevers and whether he can score again. I hope he does!
My thoughts are,
Archer
McLaughlin Webster Hutch Meredith
Wallace Saville Williams AOB
Elliott Morison
Subs King Romeo Craig Thompson Fergie Butcher Fred

NH did say after we had signed Tunnicliffe that he had an outside chance of being involved in the Stevenage game. He didn't even make the bench so my guess is he's not fit yet. I imagine he will need a run out or two with the U23's before he gets any first team action.

My thoughts are:

Archer
McLaughlin - Webster - Hutchinson - Meredith
Wallace - Saville - Williams - Bad Haircut - Fred
Elliott - Morison

Subs: King - Romeo - Craig - Thompson - Fergie - Butcher Fred

Butcher Fred may be a bit late - he doesn't finish his shift at Tesco until 2.30pm.

Not necessarily.

I sent Bomber an email (superneil@millwallplc.com) - he said he was willing to give it a try.

Once again it's hard to disagree with Silverbacks thinking.

I think Fred will start, if we have Elliott and Morrison, we need pace and crosses, Fred has one of these, but will do more of the other one than AOB.

Archer
McLaughlin, Hutch, Cooper, Meredith
Wallace, Saville, Williams, Fergie
Elliott, Morison

The back 5 pick themselves, as does Wallace, Saville and Williams.

Would select Elliott to start, regardless of Gregory's fitness, and Fergie to supply crosses to Elliott and Morison.

If Cooper not fit Webster is an excellent replacement.

Subs King, Romeo, Webster or Craig (depending on Cooper's fitness), AOB, Worrall, Gregory and Butcher.
