I can't work out why he didn't even move for the free kick. It's not like he was stranded - it went in at his near post but he didn't react at all. It's like he didn't even see it.

Actually Mama I rescind my question. I've just seen it from another angle from amongst Bolton in the north stand. Archer was actually in the middle of his goal and i don't think he really had any chance of getting anywhere near it. I was watching on ifollow and from that angle it looked completely different and that he should've had it covered - however i think the ifollow angle was deceptive.

Nothing deceptive about the free kick, the way the player lined up to the ball, it was only going in one place - top right hand corner. Poor positioning by Archer and slow reactions AGAIN, think we would be better off with Tom King in goal.

good point Robbie, he was the only one of their team who could score it, Parkinson was right to bring him on

That was a very good freekick and keepers dont always move if they know they cant get to it.

Would Forde have got to it? I dont think so.

Archers distribution was much better today and I can forgive him for that goal. After all it earl doors.

If Archer knows he won't be able to get to the ball if it goes into that area, put a Webster or Hutchinson on the post. There is always a chance the player striking the ball will hit that area. Keepers need to use their team mates to cover all angles.

A player wanted to go on the post in the 2004 England/France Euro Championship match. Prior to Zidane's free kick. David James told the player to get lost. Zidane then scored the free kick in that exact area.

Keepers may feel they own the 6 yard box & should be the only ones either making brilliant saves or conceding in this area. However there is no harm in swallowing pride & letting someone else help you out. Managers can also instruct keepers to do this.

Another advantage of putting a player on the post is it deters the attacker from putting the ball in that area in the first place.

Keeper can't dive if defender is standing beside him. And if it is heading for the top corner, the defender can't reach it, either. Add to that he is playing the entire opposition onside, the keeper was 100% right to tell him to fuck off.

Of course Archer can still dive if a defender is covering a post.

Zidanes goal against England was only chest height. So a defender on the post would have headed it away. But David James told the defender to go & then didn't even move as the free kick hit the back of the net. You may have noticed Archer didn't move either.

The Bolton player would have about two square feet to aim at if Webster was at the post. Rather than over half the goal. Webster is 6.4 & can jump at least a foot off the ground.

Offside is not an issue with a free kick on the edge of the penalty box. The priority is stopping the ball hitting the back of the within 2 seconds of the free kick being taken. As happened agsinst England & Millwall.
