Random quote: Nicky Santoro: I think in all fairness, I should explain to you exactly what it is that I do. For instance tomorrow morning ill get up nice and early, take a walk down over to the bank and... walk in and see and uh... if you don't have my money for me, I'll... crack your fcukin' head wide-open in front of everybody in the bank. And just about the time that I'm comin' out of jail, hopefully, you'll be coming out of your coma. And guess what? I'll split your fcukin' head open again. 'Cause I'm fcukin' stupid. I don't give a fcuk about jail. That's my business. That's what I do. Casino.

Red. He was very lucky and he knew it. The ref also bottled giving him a second yellow later in the match.
I have no doubt about that.

BP: If you mean the Ref bottled it when he took Gregory out in the 1st half going for a header you're spot-on. Definitely a second yellow and he should have been off.

I have just watched the extended highlights on IF and it shows how rampant we were in the second half. I had overlooked the three other decent chances we had during this period. There was a great shot on the turn from Gregory which their keeper pushed wide, a close range effort from Saville which their defender blocked and a decent long range shot from Wallace which sailed over the bar.
Not surprisingly they did not show the X rated tackle on Fergie in the first half which only resulted in in a yellow card. Nor the foul by the same player on Gregory which went unpunished. Their bloke was lucky how lenient the ref was. After the Fergie tackle everybody around me was sure it was a red and were astounded when he only got a yellow. Sadly, the ref's leniency did not extend to the two free kicks he gave which led to their goal. The second one was a blatant dive by Madine to gain the free kick from which they scored. I noticed that Madine made a special point of speaking to Morais about the goal but my lip reading skills were not good enough to spot that he probably said 'Well, the ref bought that one!'
Bunch of cheats!

Thanks Silvers,

I'm a bit late to this thread.

We played well yesterday, not as well as we did at Forest but everyone can see the change in our style of play. I hope we don't turn into one of those sides that keep turning out decent performances without getting the results.

Whilst we did alright I still feel that as the game wore on we played a little too much long ball, the case in point here I think Fred touched the ball twice in all the time he was on the pitch, the second time was when the professional trip was done to him as he was just about to switch the after burners on. We should really try to get him into the game if we bring him on.

Archer rolling the ball out and us passing it around was not a tactic of last season, even when the mid field aren't finding a way through it gets knocked back and across to find another route, refreshing. The only problem is when the ball ends up with Webster, he does the trade mark raking diagonal long ball. I've been one of Websters supporters in recent seasons, especially when Wonka ruined him, however right now I would prefer Cooper and Hutch.

Morison was off it yesterday, I would like to see Elliot start with Gregory. I would also like to NH make substitutions earlier.

The above reads like a moan, its not as I think we have started brightly and some of yesterday's play through the middle was excellent, our goal and play immediately after were class.

Played well but can't say we were unlucky. There were no unfair penalty decisions or disallowed goals that should have stood.

Their keeper & Beevers made some good blocks & they took their one chance. Being the away team with a few injuries they were going to be on the back foot.

The run up Morais took gave him the option of whipping the ball either side of Archer. So Archer was in the right place as he couldn't tell which side the ball was going to go.

The ball entered the net at below head height, so a player on the post would have blocked it.

Agree with the general theme that our style of play has improved but my thoughts were that the game generally was a bit flat and I include the crowd as it was the first home game of the season. The Bolton game was one that I viewed over the season is one that needed to be won if we are to have a second season in the Championship and so on that point I was disappointed. Key points for me were as follows;
1. Archer was situated on the side where the free kick went in and never moved Not for the first time and has a poor history on free kicks of the nature. Definately should have made a better effort to save
2. Meredith, McLaughlin, Saville and particularly Williams were the highlights in my opinion and therefore reinforces the excellent work done by NH is the transfer market.
3. Gregs and Moro worked hard as always but finishing and quality was again lacking at this level. Worries me on-going.
4. Cooper in for Webster when both fit.

Bolton were no great shakes and we should have buried them so overall I left a little disappointed

Agreed, although i feel if that standard can be maintained results will come and we won't be the walkovers people predicted.by mixing up the play goals will come from other areas
It's early days hopefully a good performance Tuesday to an inform team will see how the team can handle this level, millions don't buy character and team spirit.

Played well but Bolton came for the draw and sucked the life out of the game and were hard to break down with 10 men more often than not behind the ball.
Subs need to be introduced earlier to make any kind of imapact on the game and expect a better came on Tuesday..

Bolton Wanderers was always going to be one of our harder games at home. Will be one of the very few teams to come to The Den and play not to lose. And that is exactly what they did. Never easy for any team to face.

I think we will do much better against the likes of Birmingham City, Preston, Brentford, Ipswich Town, Nottingham Forest et al who will set up more openly, but aren't all that. Plus pick up a few shock results against teams like Leeds, Wolves and Aston Villa playing cup football and roared on by a partisan crowd.

Expect games v Burton, Bristol City, Barnsley and Sheffield United to be real slogs.

For fuck's sake...

You'll have to stop cleaning your ears out so thoroughly...complete hole now from one side to the other.

my observation's are if we took the chances we had, the Bolton goal would have counted for Jack shit. Up front is where we need to sharpen the pencils.

Sorry, Midway. Not others. Just Adam Adam, who drives me nuts. I have bruises on my forehead from banging it on the table having had pointless debates with him over the years.

We had the same debate on another thread. He banged on about putting a defender on the line to defend a free kick. I explained to him that not only would this put a goalkeeper off (which more than one top keeper has told me has put them off in the first place) more to the point it means that the opposition can then put a couple of players in front of the keeper without fear of offside, thereby blinding him. That is why you don't see defenders on the post from free kicks. Adam claimed that offside doesn't play a factor from free kicks outside the box. Ridiculous and simply wrong for the reasons given above.

So on another thread on he comes banging on about the same thing again.

It is basic stuff an hardly new. Ron Atkinson pointed this out to me in his days as Kettering Town manager in the 1970s. In the '80s I was sitting in the Altrincham stand as David Pleat took his Luton Town team through set pieces before a game at Maine Road. He worked on both attack and defence. He stopped one play in its tracks and went ballistic at a player who had suddenly dropped back, apparently without instruction, from a free kick to defend a post like he might a corner. The reasons, explained by Pleat at full volume, were again because he didn't want to have his goalkeeper swamped and needed his space to see what was coming.

But you are right: I shouldn't get annoyed with Adam. I apologise to him and you. He is simply someone who cannot take anything on board other than his own strange views or listen to the reasoned views of others and I should respect that.

For what it's worth I thought we played pretty well and if we keep playing like that wins will come, had a great view of breevers goal line clearance which he did well but a foot either side of him and he would have been fucked as other have said we will be better against teams that don't park the bus we always struggle to break them down
Saville is going to prove to be a great signing was well impressed!!!

I love how Archer gets more criticism for a free kick that was well struck, than the player that gave the free kick away. Have to say Hutch was superb, but whether it was a soft foul or not, he was all over Madine for that foul and gave the referee a decision to make. Still another good performance, agree that Bomber needs to make changes earlier, giving Elliott 10 minutes is pointless. Fred did f all apart from the one run where he was cynically fouled. 1 point and we should be sitting pretty on 6!
