Millwalladam - 27/9/2017 11:40

John Bryne was a straight swap for Mcginley.

Bryne cost 250k & Mcginley was sold for 135k in the same week.

This was an accident waiting to happen. Bryne was in his 30's & injury prone. Mcginley was in his 20's & had scored goals in his career. Including for Millwall.

Bryne scored 1 goal for Millwall. Mcginley helped Bolton to 2 promotions, cup runs & Premiership football. Once scoring 30 Championship goals in one season.

It makes me angry just thinking about it. McGinley hadn't set the world on fire for us, but anyone could see that he was a player.

Wikipedia says Mcginley scored 27 in 52 for Millwall.

I don't beleive he was that prolific for us. However he did score.

His only full season was in Rioch's final play off hang over season. He was inconsistent but then so was every other player. Espescially Phil Barber who went on to play a 100 consecutive good games under Big Mick.

The following season under Big Mick started well for Mcginley. He scored a couple of early season goals. Big Mick was then unhappy after a home 0-0 draw where Mcginley hit the bar. It was time for changes.

I don't remember that him scoring that many although I seem to remember him scoring a lot more than anyone else. Just goes to show how stupid a decision it was.

Another good player who Big Mick chose to sell around the same time as Mcginley was Paul Kerr. He could play across midfield or as a striker.

He had been a regular for Middlesborough under Rioch as they won consecutive promotions to the top flight. Playing alongside Ripley, Pallister etc.

His one season at Millwall in Rioch's play off hang over season saw him score 14 goals. Mainly from midfield.

Here is Kerr scoring against Millwall. A few weeks later Rioch signed him at the end of his play off season.

Remember a Middlesborough fan writing to 'The Lion Roars' moaning that Colin Todd had unbelievably sold him.

Mcginley was sold to make way for John Bryne but I never found out why Big Mick sold Kerr.

Kerr was in his 20's, had been available for most games in Rioch's second season & scored 14 goals. So not too old, injury prone or out classed.

McCarthy is a big nosed plastic Paddy northern know all wanker.

Worst manager this club ever had in my view.

Inherited a very good squad and left us en route for relegation with an awful squad.

Never has a Millwall manager wasted so much money on so much dross.

Could fill a page with the bad players he signed and the good ones would only need a finger of your hand to count.

Bowry, Newman, Fuchs to bring back just three very bad memories

Uwe Fucks - yes, didn't he just.

:nofinger:

I remember there used to be a bloke who sat near the corner of the cbl who'd yell "you useless German cuuuuunt Fuchs" pretty much everytime he touched the ball

For his winner against Palace alone, he shouldn't be spoken about
in those terms. Show some respect

Talking of Kerr's, both Big Mick & John Kerr told amusing stories to the press.

About how John Kerr had come to England from America. Then turned up to a Millwall training session with a pair of boots & asked to join in.

Kerr was given a 2 year contract before playing any games. He was slightly better than fellow American Bruce Murray. When fit.

Big Mick learnt his lesson & only gave Jason Beckford a contract after Beckford ran around a bit & took a free kick against Southend.

Another strange foreign signing by Big Mick was Left back, Jason Van Blerk.

He played one pre season friendly before Big Mick splashed out a whopping 300k.

The club already had Ben Thatcher & Van Blerk predictably spent most of the season on the bench or playing out of position in midfield.

At the time the money would have been better spent on a CM. Andy May was totally injury prone & Big Mick had discarded Mcglasgen, Bogie, Verveer & Paul Kerr.

Andy Roberts was solid in CM. However he was a Premiership quality CB & badly needed there as the other CB's signed by Big Mick were so poor. Did someone mention Gavin Mcquire ?

'Big Mick at Millwall'. Good idea.

I'll get maximum points but be having another 'Big Mick breakdown' by the final question.
