Just looking on the BBC website to see if any of our players started for N. Ireland v Germany, and the top headline said

"Defending champions Germany confirmed their qualification for next year's World Cup in Russia by beating Northern Ireland 3-1 in Belfast"

As I have had no interest in the world cup unless there are any Millwall players playing, I always thought that the defending champions of the world, and the host nation automatically qualified, or has something changed?

Nicked from google

The winners of next year's World Cup will not receive automatic qualification for the 2006 finals in Germany, it was announced today.

For the first time in the the competition, the holders will have to earn their place in the finals of the game's blue riband event.

The announcement, which came as a complete surprise to leading figures from the world of football as they gathered here in Busan on the eve of the draw for the 2002 tournament in South Korea and Japan, followed a proposal at today's meeting from FIFA president Sepp Blatter. He is understood to have caught even his fellow executives off guard.

So it all changed years ago looks like Sepp Blatter decided this on his own

Is it me or has the excitement gone out of the World cup ? Time was, we
would be on the ham-bone to each other, pick a boozer and get on it.
Now no-one seems to care and quite a few of my pals didn't even watch
it. Mind you, they were good judges !

Not an issue that is really going to affect England in the foreseeable future, is it?

Southgate got a £250,000 bonus for ''guiding'' England to qualification. That's on top of the already enormous salary against fucking nobody's !! These bullshit matches against no-hopers has got to stop else their gravy train will come to an end.

Why do people throw hard earned at going to these pointless events?
