King of The Jungle - 12/10/2017 17:49

Excellent series and have watched 5 episodes so far Interesting learning that the AK47 rifle used by the NKA and Vietcong was far superior to the US M16. Must say only good thing old dirty mac Harold Wilson did was to keep us out of that conflict.

Really? In what way was it superior? I know the AK is 762 and the version of the M16 was likely 556, and that AKs are very hardy weapons requiring little care and probably more robust in the harsh jungle environment, but surely they would not have been as accurate as the M16? Many engagements would be at short range in the jungle so maybe accuracy wasn't so important?

During the series it has been mentioned several times that it kept jamming in fire fights, also it needed constant cleaning. So I am guessing Albert meant reliability.

All weapons need constant cleaning especially in a harsh environment like the jungle. The AK less than most but if your weapon is to be reliable it must be clean (just waiting for Paris to pipe up on that one)... My guess is that it wasnt so much the M16s fault but rather stoned, un-self disciplined American soldiers!

I haven’t a clue about guns, I was only just reciting what was said on the programme.
Although, it has been mentioned several times during the series that the M16’s jammed quite easily in the early days, but were eventually rectified. Maybe there was a lot of exaggeration ?

Interesting read here about the (supposed) problem. Half down under ‘Reliability’.

Based on Kryan's recommendation I've set the timer to record future episodes and just started viewing transmitted episodes on catchup.

I caught the end of one the other night & have got to watch them on catch up. For the younger posters the war was literally on the news every night for years & years when I was a kid (bit similar to the Ireland in the seventies) I don't want to go all "leftie" again on you all but I saw one clip about the American chief adviser at the time who was a "Hawk" but privately was writing letters to the president saying that 1000 civilian casualties a week were unacceptable. Also for anyone whose never seen the Napalm picture of the young girl, google it.

Not wanting to go off track, this is a ten minute résumé of what happened in 1979 when China invaded Vietnam in the north. Ignore or turn down the music, China lost (some Western sources) 25,000 men in 17 days before retreating.

The Veit are an extraordinary people, if you come you'll get done.

That’s interesting. The doco video running directly after is a good watch as well.

Ended last night. Totally hooked me from start to finish.

I found myself shaking my head in disbelief at the length politicians go to hide the truth and their incompetence. Well over 2m killed and for what?

Thanks for the steer KB.

Only place i can get this is on Amazon video - and they want 60 fucking bucks for the series! I know we moan about the bbc and licence fee etc etc at home... But being here I've realised how lucky we are at home and how cushty we have things really... Not just with telly, which obviously is not very important, but with lots of things. Most notibly healthcare and housing.
