Matchday Ritual.....same as always?

I was thinking about my home game Matchday Ritual which over the years has stayed very much the same. I was talking to a mate who doesn't get the football thing and during the conversation it became apparent that the match, whilst the focal point, it is actually about the whole day for me.

Nowadays because of costs of getting from Guernsey I have to ''pick and choose'' the games I attend but my day generally is the same as follows

Flight with my son to LGW at 7am arrive at 8am. Train to Victoria and tube to Green Park where I go for brekkie at Cecconi's off New Bond Street, finish about 11/11.30am where I get the tube to Bermondsey and walk to the Blue Anchor. Straight into Sam's for a haircut, proper wet shave and trim those fucking nose hairs, eyebrows and ears....it seems to get fucking worse as time goes on !! Into the boozer for a light ale till 2.15ish then walk to The Den where I grab a stinking kangaroo burger and eat it like it's blini's and caviar!! Mostly sit Block 2 Barry Kitchener. At the end of the game a dash to London Bridge and train to Gatwick to catch last flight back to Guernsey.

It very rarely differs, except like this Sat where I will stay over because of the late k.o. but it is a ritual I love and whist i've done the same thing so many times I still look forward to it like it's new. So I was thinking am I the unusual one or do others have a set day which hasn't changed much over the years?

You're living. I just go to the game and come home. Might have a cold tray of chips in the ground if I'm in a good mood.

leave sunny south norwood at one, go to parents in sunny west norwood. drive to ground with dad. if i am feeling flash, living to the max and want to show off, i might have a coffee and a vape outside the millwall cafe.

after the game, me and the group head back to cars parked in new cross, head home to respective shit holes.

Used to be we'd all meet in the pub early, Kaluki, beer and Charlie
and off we jolly well go ! Nowadays it's a leisurely drive to Arment's,
park up near the ground, see what reprobates are loitering near
the ticket office, catch-up bunny and upstairs for a beer.

I don't put my shorts on until 2.45pm - and insist on being second from last, leaving the Dressing Room.

And touch the Den sign, before running onto the pitch.

Always wear something blue. Either pick my mate up or he picks me up. Usually have a plate of chips and tea in the Millwall Cafe or occasionally have a pint in the Windsor. Sometimes have pint or two in the Station Hotel in Hither Green if we played well and won.
Midweek have fish and chips in the Brockley's Rock beforehand. Sometimes that's the highlight of the night!

Meet my mate from local at Gatwick about 12.30. Quick beer.....then train to London Bridge and change for south Bermondsey.

Get to ground for about 2ish. Buy tickets then go in. Another beer.

After the match usually drink round London Bridge or new cross till bout half 7-8. Then some greasy burger or fried chicken for slow train back to Ifield station. Then walk back to local till midnightish

I'm not local at the moment, but my matchday ritual has become adapted to the dwindling number of local boozers to the ground as the years go by.

Used to be the Archer, then after that used to do Golden Lion prior to and LB after. Then that changed to The Marquis and Hob respectively. Then The Marquis and 5 Bells. As they gradually shut/gentrify/ruin the pubs choices become limited. Now usually p+m at manzes Deptford to line the stomach. Walk through the african flea market where they sell stuff that looks like they found it at the local tip. Few beers in marquis on way to the ground.

1049 train from where a few of us live and arrive to the pub an hour later. Intoxicate myself in lager and other substances till walk to the ground at 2.30.
After- same route back to the pub Down the blue and swig again heavily till cab back to waterloo where get train back home and consume more lager till early hours....

usually borrow Little Nellie , but weather conditions need to be fair to good or she will not play ball. Have to get back before it gets to dark, the trip lasts 90 mins , bring her down in Mudchute and pull into covered outbuilding. Canary Wharf , some times a brekkie in Kruger's, then George , tube to Bermondsey.

Last week was a problem as some anonymous crew were drifting about in an airship near Greenwich , when i contacted CITY AIRPORT CONTROL, they could not identify the craft and warned me clear of the area. Apparently it was listed as a UFO, intriguing story nothing in the press.

Used to leave the house 7/8 to get to the pub for 10.30, if earlier KO, leave house about 2/3am on the coach and in the closed doors pub for 6, over the years that was golden, barnaby, alscot, albany, foresters, get to the den and seated for about 1 past 3, sometimes on odd occasion we'd get in at half time if a really shit season. Always knew / knew of mostly everyone in the boozer which made for a great day out home or away, after the game, rare occasion I'd find myself loitering on the ilderton (which was usually a bore), with my feather duster ready to tickle anyone I felt was a menace, back to the pub usually though where I'd remain until 11pm or go on a crawl, 12, 1am 3am, then find trains all ended and either go on to a 'club', world, lock in at lemon, carlton, coach horses, down okr or in town until 2 4, 6am or sleep on a burgess park bench, round a mate's, at euston, in my own flat.

When lived on the old Den used to be a lot less adventurous for home games, shouting Millwall at 9am and the shout from flat above saying shut up, going down ozzies for breakfast, or 2and2 at peckham, I was easily a controlled alcoholic back then, who'd have thought it, five hours before, seven+ hours after but all seemingly good fun, albeit the bottle of jd on the train down for thee birmingham match, getting searched at Euston for singing Millwall amongst brummies and not remembering a thing after arriving at the alscot, not waking from the black out until the cunt scored - if we'd have gone up we'd have been fucking murder week in week out. Away days were the best though, rule of thumb always get there for 11am no matter where it is, plot up and enjoy yourself. Getting aggro and nicked for nothing well not always nothing, sometimes £250 ha, I fucking hate Wigan, the strangest being invited into a preston home boozer and mates thinking it was ok and being completely uncomfortable standing next to the pool table. Drinking in a home boozer at pompey a bit different as the three I was with would have killed the entire boozer.

On some night games when palace playing would go down the barnaby just in case cardiff or another made a stop off. Fuck knows what I'd have done had 40 cardiff showed up but gladly never found out. There would be an undercover old bill not very good at being undercover and a car would come around at least once like clockwork with fans looking for rivals, then someone moody would walk in selling stuff they happened to have come across on the cheap. Of course for a certain duration on match days that was pretty much the viet cong selling DEE VEE DEES. It did start getting expensive though, spending £100 to £150 on a day out, weren't right. I did smoke as well though. A mate used to save his by hiding in the toilet on trains when conductor about, surprisingly always worked. I miss it, twas huge part of me life. Obviously.
