I have asked both members of the younger generation in our household this question, and neither could answer. The money I invested in their education was
Wasted!!

It is about VPNs.
I have just bought a new freesat box for the new telly. The box connects to the internet to access iPlayer and other catch up TV services.
I cannot watch them due to my location.

So, the question is can I use a VPN to get round this problem?
If so, how do I get it to apply to the set top box?

Please don't get too technical. Imagine you are explaining to an idiot.
Alright, don't imagine.....you are talking to an idiot!

Sensible answers only please. I'm not in the mood for nonsense. Got it?

Paul I cannot answer your question, but I used to watch a free to air service when abroad but on a recent trip it was no longer free and you could subscribe to enable viewing.

I think this is a VPN provider.

Hope it helps a little.

Yes, they can, not always 100% though as some can get blacklisted e.g. by Netflix etc. I use Cyberghost for a few quid a month but Google top ten vpns to get s broader view.

Hey BP.

Yes you should be able to set up your new equipment using a VPN.

Nord VPN is without doubt one of the best three on the market. The good thing about it is that you can get a free 3 day trial without filling in credit card details or any other crap. You can find it here: https://free.nordvpn.com/

TBH it is the one I use for watching all the Lions games. But if you use the free trial and are happy, DO NOT sign up. I just ask you to contact me by PM first.

Hope this helps.

A VPN tricks your internet into believing you are somewhere else. So for iplayer you need to pretend to be in Britain. But some service providers are fighting back. Sky block the use of VPN's. Vypr have invented something called Chameleon which overrides the block so you can still watch it. They offer a 30 day money back guarantee. Make sure you choose the Chameleon option.

I also found this. It has good reviews.

Thanks lionmush.
I think that is the same one Arthur 2 sheds recommended earlier in the season.
I'm very happy to pay for the service, and I will PM you before committing.
My question really relates to the mechanical steps required to get the internet connection of the box to be routed via the VPN.
With a pc or a laptop, it is easy, you have a keyboard and you start the VPN. I get that.

I guess I should really ask.....How do I get the set top box to be routed via the VPN?

Maybe, if I do sign up for a VPN, I can avoid that poxy video service whose name I cannot say, and listen only to audio commentary of lions matches?

Thanks Arthur.

I used to use expatshield when it was free. I believe you have to pay now.

If I have it running on my pc or laptop, will it automatically transfer to the set top box??

You will probably need to connect it to the Freesat box.

I think the answer is to put the VPN on my laptop then connect that to the telly.

That's the info I needed Arthur, thank you.
Do you happen to know if the VPN you recommended has Smartstream?
