I know the story, we all do. But as much as I've been taught and believe the day to be about celebrating his downfall, is the day not also a celebration that it can be tried again? and the reason other effigies are used. I think as much as it's a reminder about what could have happened, it's also a point in history kept alive, that the establishment know the people on the street haven't forgotten that the politicians can be deposed.

It's the last part of Elizabeth 1's Secret Agents tonight on BBC2 21:00.

Been a fascinating series and, I'm pretty certain, tonight covers the Gunpowder Plot and Guido Fawkes. Well worth a watch

Surely Elizabeth was not really interested in the gunpowder plot on account of her earlier demise?
And also the series Gunpowder covered it in much more depth.
Sorry to be picky Purely

The series is about her spies. At the end of part 2 Elizabeth had died but her chief spy (Robert Cecil) was still alive. I think tonight it's about him exposing and foiling the gunpowder plot.

Oh, but I do!!!

Seriously, that Gunpowder series was probably the most graphically violent series I have ever seen on TV. Portrayed the brutality of the times very well.
Fair point purely.

Fair enough, mate. Must admit I have not seen it.
There is so much Tudor/medieval stuff on at the moment it makes me a bit
Mrs BP loves to watch it all, so if it keeps her quiet, it'll do for me

Gunpowder was a load of shit written (lied about( by an IRA cunt. Guy Fawkes and his mob were terrorists and traitors who deserved everything they got.

Catholics in England at the time were treated very well broadly speaking.

Elizabeths Secret Agents was very very good. Makes a change for the BBC to do something that doesn't distort history or present an anti England viewpoint.

I am a Catholic so I can say what I fucking like about the cunts - especially the greasy dago ones behind all the plots against the Throne of England

The 'Elizabeth's Secret Agents' is absolutely brilliant . Appears tobe accurate from what I learnt at school. One of the \BBC's best series for years.

What they done to those executed , before they got the chop was pretty gruesome , but, those were the standards of the time.

We should have dispensed with Holloway in that fashion.
