Just Back v The Blades

A real backs to the wall performance and a terrific result.

We started off brightly with some good play down the left, Gregory looked lively and there was a neat back heel from Jed. We looked on the front foot and tried hard to press them back. They had other ideas. They had clearly seen many videos of us retreating back to our trusted formula of two banks of four and began to push the ball about with ease. We were not helping by backing off and gifting them space and they duly obliged by giving us the run around. We did try to push forward and there was a good ball into their box which fell just behind Gregory and he couldn't quite turn and get his shot away.

They thought it was just a matter of time had some good runs down their right when the ball flashed across our box. It only needed a touch for the opening goal. Their self confidence let them down. Jed picked the ball up on the right, surged forward before hitting a good pass to Morison on the edge of their box. Hit hit it across to Gregory who had his back to goal. He made a neat turn, gave himself half a yard, set himself up for a sweet shot across the keeper and it nestled into the corner for 1-0. The Den went nuts. Against the run of play was an understatement. They knew that if they kept doing what they were doing then a goal would come. They were helped by the Lino on the far side who gave two offside decision against us that we're wrong. We were right in line with play so we could see his error. They pushed and pressed us back and eventually the pressure told. A neat ball over the defence saw Mahlon ball watching and their bloke side footed it over Archer for the equaliser. We were glad to hear the whistle so we could regroup as we were being outplayed.

The second half began with a slight change. Mahlon played further up the park and their left wing back was not making such threatening runs. However, they continued to dominate the play for about twenty minutes. The ball flashed across our box a couple of times and most of us thought it was just a matter of time. They suddenly seemed to run out of puff and the game began to turn. From one of our attacks they broke quickly from their box. There was a terrific tackle in the centre circle and then a peach of a pass inside their full back by Gregory. The FB got a toe to it but it made its way to Mahlon who looked up and drilled it into the far corner. The Den went nuts again and Mahlon looked as if he had just won the lottery.

They weren't done yet and really poured forward. We were getting overwhelmed in the middle so off came Gregory, to a standing ovation and on came Thompson. Suddenly there wasn't the same amount of space in the middle. Tigrish Thommo got stuck in good and proper and they weren't getting it all their own way. NH clearly decided that to hold onto what you had was a good policy so off came Fergie and on went Craig for us to go three at the back. We really got stuck into them and fought tooth and nail for every fifty fifty. From such a period of play we got a free kick wide left. It sailed to the far post where Cooper was getting manhandled big time. However, he got his head to the ball, nodded it over the keeper onto the underside of the bar where it neatly dropped the right side of the line for our third. The Den went ballistic. Off came a cream crackered Jed for AOB who hardly touched the ball as we played out three minutes of added time before Rockin All Over the World was played loud and proud. Their mob had half emptied in disgust by then as we all knew that for twenty minutes they had the game in the palm of their hand and blew it.

Archer had little to do and I think either had no direct saves to make or maybe one. Mahlon looked his normal energetic self and, apart from his blip for their goal had a good game. Meredith looked back to his best with some solid play in defence and attack. Hutch and Cooper were as solid as a rock and the only small error Hutch made was when the ball ran away from him near the line.

Jed is a handful and a big threat and has pace and power. He was a completely different player from Fred (injured and out for four weeks) as his decision making was spot on. Both Saville and Tunnicliffe had decent games and the latter put in a better performance. Fergie had his moments but faded late on.

Up front we worked our socks off. Morison had a very good game but Gregory was a touch better and deserved his MOM for a tireless performance. His goal and his impressive work rate when our backs were to the wall was the difference today. In the past we might have rolled over and lost by the odd goal in three but today was not one of those days and there were many smiles at the final whistle.

Great to see Gregory score and his tracking back and tackle to initiate the move that lead to our 2nd was above and beyond the call of duty, but my MOTM was Tunnicliffe. He fought for every ball and tried to inspire those around but the stand-out moment for me was late in the game when he closed down and harried their CD to such an extent that under pressure he kicked the ball out of play. It's the 1st time in my memory that our crowd have arisen from their seats to applaud an attempted tackle

Tommo on as they were picking up all the loose balls in the midfield and controlling it good move and may have won us the game but i think they were fucked by then anyway.

Many thanks from the US of A, Silver. Fantastic report. And result.

But remind me. Who was it we were playing again...?

My report was my second effort. In my first I noted the save from their keeper from Saville but my iPad (annoyingly) went popsy and I had to start all over again. And in my haste to finish it I forgot the save. I make no notes, read no reports and rely on my memory which does have its blips!

Irrelevant really, but if you must know... A bunch of Ice Skaters from up North.

Thanks for the Report, Silverlion.

Just seen the goals on YouTube, it seemed particularly noisy down the Den today.

Dare I say it....?

But it sounds like a good old-fashioned Second Division game that we all used to go down the Den and enjoy on a regular basis...

Seems a long time ago.

When Harris brought Thompson on, I thought he was trying to shut shop too early and we would be punished. That substitution changed the game, as we were being overrun before he came on.
Masterstroke by Harris.
A special mention for Mahlon, apart from one blip, thought he had a blinder. (He seems to have bulked up and looks bigger)

It was, and we got the win.

The Den was rocking at times.

Think this match could be the turning point in our season Harris may have abandoned the hoof ball which bought Gregory more into the game and he had a great game we attacked and defended as a team two defenders scoring bears that out He got his tactics and way of playing spot on If we continue with this style of play we will win more games than we lose Carry on super Neil

I agree with the report after our first goal, I would say we had the best of the first half, we looked good going forwards with the ball on the ground, our counter attacking was great. They looked average at the back they had one soft shot from just inside our box that archer got down to his right for and their goal other then that it was side to side passing from them.

Thought all our goals were well taken,Mahlon looked as cool as a kitten stroking that ball home
Gregory reminded us of what he can do, super goal. Cooper..well he took that well, could've gone over or back off the bar but fortune favoured us today
Great never say die performance, and Williams will be back soon.

Yes, his place on our bench will certainly strengthen our squad, indeed...
