Well, the police obviously don't think it's much of a grudge match, as it was sanctioned for a Monday night KO

Also, less Brighton fans, as a ratio of their average home crowd, bothered with this compared to our turn out for poxy Barnsley.

My Brighton supporting neighbour said he wasn't bothering & has also said he actually prefers Millwall as a proper fixture home and away in the past.

So, not even Brighton can take the spotty nigels seriously.

Now, imagine Wall v West Ham on a Monday night

Mind you completely over the top policing for the game, there’s a picture going round of 50 palace fans getting escorted to the ground & the amount of Old Bill is ridiculous, add that Palace fans had to jump through hoops to get tickets & even then some got letters basically telling them not to turn up or they won’t get in I can see why a lot wouldn’t even bother.

There really needs to be a inquiry of some sort into the old bill & how they take the piss policing football in this country, all we hear is police cuts etc etc from the filth yet go any football match where there’s half a bit of rivalry & there’s literally hundreds of the cunts basically doing fuck all & taking money off the taxpayer for doing it.

Policing football is an income and business model, it's not a community service.

There are a few things we regret in life, one of mine is not scaling that gate when we got locked in. Jumped up stewards thought they could stand in the way even after we got let out, so I chucked one in a bush.

You have got to factor in the rail strike and horrendous accident on the
M23 to be fair to the Nigels. I think the ultras took that police escort
with them.

The reason for the over policing of this game is Sussex police completely fucked up the previous league fixture.

False statements to the media about finding knives in the ground. Letting loads in ticketless, loads with tickets not getting in.

Was told by one of the 'Brighton lads' that mid/late afternoon a group of Brighton supporters lost there plod shadow by going into a pub and using the fire escape to exit.

It's the Brighton fans that didn't bother going! That was actually my point. Not even Brighton fans, who only other contender for a big local derby is Crawley Town, take them that seriously.

As a percentage of usual home crowd in the league, more Millwall fans went to watch us v Barnsley than Brighton fans turned up for the 'big' derby.

The drop off in gate would be like Millwall v West Ham in the FA Cup only getting a crowd of c.4,500 home fans.

Which is odd. Because I live in Sussex and know a local officer well through a friend & five-aside, and he says that Millwall has always been a more challenging fixture for them to police, along with Leeds, Birmingham City and Southampton - over Palace, who he implied didn't really have any serious trouble makers, just a number of lairy wannabes who like to chant at the station.

Fortunate it was their own gaff, they don't let you use fire escapes in Newcastle ha.

Pathetic plastic manufactured rivalry, just like palace as a whole.

Why do they 'choose' Brighton as their main rival over Millwall? Because it's a lot easier to stand around trying to look hard in Brighton than it is in Bermondsey. Wankers

Indeed. And not even Brighton fans buy into it.

You have to feel for Brighton & Hove Albion; the only league club nearby is Crawley Town. They've kinda been forced into this make believe rivalry with Palace, for want of a better fixture.

I don't know any other real derby in this country that would see only 1/3 of the usual home crowd turn up - just because it's an FA Cup game. Portsmouth v Southampton, Monday night, FA Cup 3rd Round - oh, only 6,000 Pompey fans will bother will that.

Football in general, the FA Cup and the Palace-Brighton rivalry.
"What rivalry?" the neutral will ask?

Regardless of result, one of the most depressing football matches have watched in a long time.

The soul has been ripped out of football.

Couldn't agree more, for any palace fan that's ever tried to convince a neutral of the hatred between palace and Brighton, they would of watched it last night and thought you was winding them up. We dislike each other but you can't compare the fixture to a proper derby like Tyne wear, 2nd city or north London

Exactly, what the gate would be like for a Monday night FA Cup tie for all the other big rivalries if they followed the Brighton V Palace level of interest...

Liverpool v Manchester United Att: 19,000

Arsenal v Tottenham Hotspur Att: 20,000

Bristol City v Bristol Rovers Att: 6,000

Southampton v Portsmouth Att: 10,000

Millwall v West Ham United Att: 4,000

Newcastle United v Sunderland Att: 17,000

Burnley v Blackburn Rovers Att: 6,700

Aston Villa v Birmingham City Att: 10,000

Do you think those would be the actual gates? No.

Brighton v Palace is not a proper derby. Nowhere near.

Don't think I'd fancy looking 'Hard' in Brighton ........... not with all those shirt-lifters about.

Having to name a match after a motorway kind of sums the whole sorry affair up.

The ‘M23 Derby’. Just like Palace themselves, boring, monotonous, and surburban. Not exactly the ‘Old Firm’ is it?

But remember everyone ‘South London is theirs’

If it wasn't for traffic police the M23 / A23 is a great road for whizzing down, especially the bit past Cuckfield.

But, take your point. They should call it the Surrey / Sussex Showdown.
