The men who've shaped Millwall - 1890's

In the early 1880's a group of young lads from Scotland came to London to find work.
They found employment at Morton's jam factory in the West Ferry Road on the Isle of Dog's and within a few years had formed Millwall Rovers.

On Saturday 3rd October 1885 Millwall Rovers played their first ever game which they lost 5-0 against Fillebrook

As we celebrate Millwall's 125th year, we look at a significant player from each decade who has been part of the history of Millwall FC.

1890's John Calvey

John (Jack) Calvey was born on 23.August 1875 in Stockton, Durham

Calvey was just 19 years-old when he joined Millwall Athletic from his local club South Bank Juniors, where he'd once scored 10 goals in a match.

He started his Millwall career in great style scoring a hat-trick on his debut.

A stocky forward, Calvey weighed 12st and stood 5' 11' he knew how to use his weight to make room for himself in the opponent's penalty area and was a.strong and forceful player

During the 1896/7 season Calvey scored a total of 33 goals in only 34 games including 5 against Wolverton in a 12-0 victory, he also scored 4 goals in a 9-0 victory in a friendly match against the German FA XI.

In 1897/98 he scored his 100th Millwall goal in a 2-2 draw with Gravesend (this total would have included friendly matches and United League (Reserve) matches which are not counted in his career total).

Calvey won a Southern League and two United League titles while at Millwall.

In 1900 after 5 years at the club he signed for Nottingham Forest (while there he gained his only England cap), but returned to Millwall for one season in 1904/05

With 98 goals in 152 appearances Calvey held the record as Millwall's top goalscorer from 1905 until Teddy Sheringham beat his total in 1991

After he retired from football he became a dock worker until his death in January 1937 (exact date unknown) at the age of 61.
